Al says, "My grandmother called it 'pigeon disease'." To quote the Beacon-News article by Mark O'Leary, "...as far as the Wagner family is concerned...Al has been racing pigeons since he was 4, just like his dad and uncle, who learned the sport from his father in Germany." As Al's children grew, they learned from the time they could walk to care for racing pigeons, breed, train and race them.
At five years of age, his youngest daughter had the winning bird for the 300 Mile Junior Race for the Far West Racing Pigeon Club. She then took 2nd place for the 200 Mile Junior Race and 3rd place for the 150 Mile Junior Race. She was bested in the last two races by her brother and sister. All the birds raced were from the Wagner Family Loft.
